Luke's Room

I have always known that if I had a little boy, I would want his room to be a nautical theme. I've always been drawn to that. So here's what I've done so far...

I plan to hang a large oar under the shelf. I just need to find one first.

My mom was nice enough to make this cute chevron quilt!

My sister-in-law, Shallane, made the cute wall art!

Paige and Kate's Room

For Paige's birthday (in July) she wanted a few more decorations in her room. I had very few things in it before. So here's what I did...

Luke's smiles

I love it when Luke smiles. Especially because it doesn't happen very often. Something that has been worrying me and Nate is that Luke doesn't make eye contact with us very often. When he does, it makes me so happy, but it just doesn't happen as often as I would expect.

A couple weeks ago, Luke had an appointment with a pediatric ophthalmologist. At his 2 month check-up, I pointed out to the pediatrician that Luke's right eye often looks outward. It makes me wonder if he has a hard time focusing on us. Our pediatrician referred us to the ophthalmologist, who told us that it's too early to say whether or not he has a real eye problem. Infants are sometimes delayed in their vision, and their eye muscles may need time to develop and strengthen. He said at 6 months we will re-evaluate and see if it's still an issue.

I feel like things keep coming up that worry me about Luke. I love him to death and I just hope that he is able to have a normal, healthy life. It's scary when you feel like your baby isn't seeing you or reacting to you. Hopefully I'm just worrying over nothing.

First snow of the season

It snowed on Thursday morning (November 20th) and the girls were pretty excited. It didn't stick around for too long, but they had fun while it lasted.

Do you like Halle's gloves?

Fall in Liberty Lake

I love fall around here so much. It's just beautiful. Especially on a sunny day. I took these pics with my phone, but I thought they turned out pretty well. If only fall could last a little longer...

Halloween 2014

On the Tuesday before Halloween, our ward did a Chili/Soup Cook-off and there were a few games and activities there. It was a little crazy because there were TONS of people everywhere, but it's always fun to hang out as a ward. I really love the Liberty Lake Ward.

On Halloween, we just did the usual... Trick or Treating around our neighborhood. I was so bummed that it decided to rain while we were out, but that's October for you. The girls still seemed to have fun though.

Family walk

A few weeks ago, we went on a 4 mile family walk along the Centennial Trail. It felt like eternity with 4 kids, but I'm glad we did it. Nate is determined to not raise wussy kids, so he pretty much forced us to keep going, even though the kids were all getting tired and fussy. The last mile, I basically ran with a screaming Luke, back to the car. That was fun.

Seattle Children's Hospital

A month ago, Luke had his appointment with the specialist at the Vascular Anomalies Clinic at Seattle Children's Hospital. I wrote an e-mail to our family members, updating them on the appointment, and I think I will just paste that e-mail here...

Today we had an appointment at Seattle Children's to find out more about Luke's malformation. The specialist (he is an ENT who specializes in vascular anomalies) spent a lot of time with us and was quite thorough. He had us get an ultrasound of Luke's malformation there also.

He assured us that we don't need to be extremely worried about Luke. He sees these all the time though, so that's easy for him to say. He said that it's best to watch it for a few months and see what it's going to do. Unfortunately, in the last week or so, Nate and I have noticed that it has begun to grow in length, toward the back of his head. So that's very frustrating.

Anyway, we are going to watch it for at least 6 months. He will most likely end up having surgery that will remove the entire thing. It's basically up to us when we want to do the surgery, but it is not recommended to do general anesthesia on infants under 6 months, if you don't absolutely have to. We are thinking that we would want to have it done when he is around a year old. We will see what happens over the next few months though.

He was very reassuring about the surgery and said that it has a great success rate. There is always a chance that it could begin to grow again, but generally he is able to remove it all so that it doesn't grow back.

As far as an official diagnosis, he said it is a venous malformation of the scalp. Luckily, it doesn't look like there are any arteries involved, just veins.

We are feeling OK about things. It's frustrating and stressful to have any kind if medical issue with your child, but I know that it could always be worse. We believe that he is going to be fine in the end, and eventually his hair will cover any scars.

Waiting to meet with the doctor
