Hawaii???

So, we are thinking of taking a trip to Hawaii next month. I found tickets out of Seattle for about $250 roundtrip! So the only thing holding us back is our fear of taking Paige on a 6 hour plane ride. Does anyone have experience with this? How do people do it? I have no idea if she would be able to sleep or not. Is this a bad idea? I can't decide. My sister-in-law told me about this natural herbal supplement that helps babies fall asleep. I guess if all else fails I could do that..?

You can ask her doctor, they sometimes have ideas of harmless medication that can help with the pressure change and might help her sleep.

I'm not sure about a 6 hour flight but I'm taking Joshua on a 2 hour one next week and I'm terrified! I've got a few snacks and 'activities' like a new book I'm hoping to keep him entertained with. The time of day you fly may impact how she reacts. Can you fly during her regular nap time?

Oh and BTW I am SOOOO jealous!!!

I say go for it. I've taken brody on at least 10 round trip flights most of which I flew at least one way alone and even a few since he's began walking. The best thing is if there is an open seat you can put her car seat in. Brody usually falls asleep. Also, a portable DVD player a few news toys she hasn't played with food and you should be set. Even if you don't have a seat for the chair she should be OK if you bring stuff to keep her entertained. Just don't sit at the end of the row. if you want more advice email me nellyo521@aol.com oh and benadryl I hear puts kids to sleep. it sure knocks me out when I take it. up to you

do it!! (i might be a little biased here)

it's seriously not as bad as you think ... we were TERRIFIED when we took add and gwen to texas. but they were both SO good. addi was so fascinated about being in a plan that it kept her occupied for at least two hours. then we walked around for a while, she slept for a while (MIRACLE!), she ate snacks, read books, colored, watched the movie ... it really was pretty easy.

COME COME COME!!

i would say go for it! what a great price for tickets! when we went with breanna she did NOT sleep the entire flight, but did not have any meltdowns. if you fly on hawaiian they have these cool media players u can rent for like $15 or $20 and watch movies/cartoons....so that entertained her for awhile. we walked around the plane ALOT, i got her all sorts of "surprises" from the dollar store. we colored, ate lots of fun snacks, played with plastic cups, she was entertained with ice for a good half hour, sang songs, etc. rob and i kept switching who was holding her and it worked well. the hard part was on the way home i did it all by myself, no fun, but still she did well. she crashed in the car both times as soon as we got out of the airport, but man was a vacation to hawaii fun!

i definitely recommend it....just have lots of patience with her and i tried to look at our watches as little as possible. if you could get her to sleep, it would be a heavenly trip :)

Well, we hope you are planning on visiting us! Are you thinking Oahu or a different island? When are you thinking to travel? My mom is still with us for a few weeks, and our only spare space is on our porch (Which you are of course welcome to. ;-) As for travel, we tried cold medicine with Eden to help her sleep on a flight...but it had the opposite effect for her. We flew to the mainland at Christmas 3mo. ago (Paige's age now). It wasn't that bad. Just bring things to keep her occupied. Nap and bed time were the hardest, cause Eden didn't want to sleep. I had to pace the airplane isle for 15 or 20 minutes till she gave up and fell asleep. But, she's the type who WON"T sleep anywhere but her crib. I don't know how Paige is.

It really is not to bad. By the time we moved back to Delaware Gracie had made 5 round trip flights to Delaware, around 12 hours each way. We did not give her anything, we had new toys and lots of food! she was Great. We would walk a lot when ever we could. You will be fine and it is not too bad.

I have done the Seattle to Hawaii trip with a baby as well as Seattle to NY. I was flying without Nick. With two parents and one baby, you'll be fine. Don't think you're going to read any books on the plane! Neither of my kids sleep well if not in their beds, so they didn't really sleep on the planes, but they were surprisingly well behaved. Take or rent on the plane a DVD player and bring a new toy. I have tried children's benedryl, which you're not supposed to do anymore, but I am quite friendly with our pediatrician and she said it's fine, but "I didn't tell you that." Both of my kids were made drowsy by this, but powered their way through it. Overall, the plane ride is very much worth it for the trip. Good luck. Oh, and make sure you get an isle seat. Try for an empty seat next to you and board early.

One more thing... make sure she is drinking, eating, or at least sucking a binkie during take-off and landing. I don't ever give my kids candy EXCEPT ON PLANES. If their ears start hurting, they might not want a healthy snack, but she may take Skittles. Have them hidden just in case. The swallowing will help keep her ears from having the pressure problems. Starve her for an hour or two before take-off so that she wants to eat/drink a lot.

Sam and I just took our first flight with David a few weeks ago. We were terrified but he ended up doing really well. Like everyone says, just take lots of snacks and toys. We took our laptop too so he could watch cartoons. It was a 7 hour trip. He slept for maybe 30 minutes. The rest of the time he was surprisingly good. They were both full flights so he had to sit on our laps the whole time with some stranger in our row. I wouldn't do it again any time soon because it definitely wears you out (depending on what kind of baby you have, I guess) but it was worth it for the trip we went on.

If you let a doctor know I am sure the can either prescribe something to ease her. Don't worry about what other people will think (or might say). They obviously don't have children and don't know how they react. I don't know if people just expect you to never be able to ride planes until your children are 5 or 6. Don't worry it will all work out. Bring things to entertain or do the DVD thing

You should totally come, we would love to see you. I've done that flight many of times and both my kids do so well. It really goes by pretty fast. I think she would probably do fine. And kids usually adjust to the time difference pretty well. Come that would be so fun.
