Definition: A female business owner who is actively balancing the role of mom and the role of entrepreneur
Do any other moms out there wish they had a way to make some money on the side? Or just wish you had a fun hobby that happened to make some money? I do. I know that being a mom is very important, and I am so thankful that I've been able to have my girls. But I constantly feel like I'm not contributing enough if I'm not making money- even just a little bit.
I'm always thinking about a business I could start, or a lucrative hobby I could take up. Nate is very business-minded, and I think he would love for me to do something also. But what? I've had so many ideas, but there is always a flaw with every one. My most recent idea is a dessert catering business from my home. It's a cool idea because you set the schedule and you only prepare things when an order is placed, so you don't lose money. Plus, you don't have to pay rent for a business space. I love baking treats and finding fun recipes (which isn't helping me lose weight), so I think I would enjoy it. The problem is that I don't know how I would effectively advertise and I don't know if I would get any business with the poor economy. Hmm...
Anyway, do any other moms feel this way? Being a mom is busy enough, but do you feel like you should be doing something more? I probably shouldn't feel like that, but I do.

ALL the time! But coming up with an idea and doing all the business licensing and getting insurance and blah, blah, bah is too much of a headache for me.
I do too b/c I want to do something more.....and b/c Rob is always talking about businesses too :) I'm sure you knew that, I know rob and nate talk about businesses all the time.
I want to do something that will make a lot of money and give me the sense of accomplishment that I don't find all the time being a stay at home mom.
I'll let u know if I come up with an idea, but I really like yours!
It's like you're in my head. I have this conversation (sometimes through tears, ha ha ha ha) with Sam about 3 times a day.
I hear you! you have a telent with crafts which I saw from your previous posts, you can try posting them at Etsy. I have a little business as well check it out if you have time, www.cutiebows.blogspot.com
I totally hear ya. I feel bad when I occassionally splurge and buy me something. Nick and I have had this conversation many times but we just can't think of what we can do to make a little extra.
Did you make those cupcakes? Yum!
Have you ever thought of doing behind the scenes work for someone oppose to the actual business yourself. for example my friend edits the pictures taken by professionals. The wife was going to do it, and got it all set up when she was prego, then she miscarried the baby and her husband decided to do it since they had already got a license and the editing program, he now has enough photographers he works for that he quit his job and soley edits all from his home or wherever, whenever he wants. She now just had a baby a few days ago and may be staying home.
Or you could learn how to keep peoples books, you don't have to have a special license or be a CPA to do that.
You could do medical transcribing I think is what it is called - but I hear its pretty easy and you can make up to $40,000. I got a bunch of literature once because I was going to do it on the side. You just have to be a good typer I think.
Anyway just some thoughts - I am working towards eventually opening up my own CPA partnership and working from home doing taxes and financial planning. I am in the process of getting my CFP license.
But getting to the point of actually making money is so hard, finding clients, advertising etc - makes me nervous - but seriously totally possible.
Also you could look into mommy bloggers. there are a TON of mommy bloggers mostly SAHM of which make good money blogging. Some of which quit their full time jobs to blog full time. They even wrote about it in parents magazine.
You could learn photography, seems like a ton of people have started doing that.
woops I am logged in as Paul - that was obviously me Kristi Brewer
I am always trying to think something up too. I love making money and having extra for nice vacations and eating out !! (then I don't have to cook or do the dishes !!) But I do know that running some food related business from your home could be tricky - food handlers permits and such. I already thought of all desserts too ... but if someone got sick off your product and sued ... it would be a sad day for the business. I have totally thought this through. Anyway, good luck ... let me know what you come up with !!
